Hambantota 2018 Commonwealth Games : Impressions of a foreign friend
With regard to Hambantota 2018 legacy plan, considering all what has been carried out so far and what will certainly be done in the months ahead, we selected seven letters to summarize implication and motivation of Sri Lankan authorities and Hambantota 2018 bid committee. Those seven letters are P.R.A.C.H.A.L. seven letters like the seven years ahead the d date. Those letters, according to us, represent Hambantota 2018 legacy plan and Sri Lankans’ motivation to host 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Sri Lanka’s biggest investment zone at Hambantota
The southern town of Hambantota, currently seeing most of the development in the country with an airport, sports facility and convention centre and other mega facilities, is set to witness the construction of Sri Lanka’s biggest investment zone at its port site -- the size being almost equal to all investment zones in the country put together.
Green Hambantota
New Hambantota city next to the port will be built in a well-planned manner. Provisions are made even at the concept and design phase itself for renewable energy and eco-friendly use of resources and waste disposal.
Hambantota Harbour ahead of schedule
The name “Hambantota” was derived from the Sinhala word “Hamban” and “Thota” (Port). The latter means the “sea port”. Hence, “Hambantota” was really the “Sea Port for Hambans”.

The possibility of integrating Sports, Tourism and Education development is extensively discussed and all authorities have agreed to work towards a common goal which also provides the base to facilitate Commonwealth Games or any future sports event.
