Green Hambantota

New Hambantota city next to the port will be built in a well-planned manner. Provisions are made even at the concept and design phase itself for renewable energy and eco-friendly use of resources and waste disposal.

The master plan to develop Hambantota also laid provisions to generate electricity from waste as well. Sunshine and wind which have been identified as potential generators of renewable energy, especially in the coastal belt are most abundant throughout Hambantota. These are the major areas where the entrepreneurs can successfully invest in.

The multi-billion dollar new port being built in Hambantota in southern Sri Lanka will use renewable energy for some of its power requirements. "This is going to be a green port," Chairman-Port Authority said. "We're going to use solar power for all street lighting. It will be an environmentally-friendly port."

The Air port, Sports Village and City and all multi-purpose venues are also going to have alternative energy. MP Namal Rajapakse has said that Green City Project is dedicated to increasing the use of abundant natural energy resources and that the government has already brought together knowledgeable professionals to plan, appraise and implement this vision from the planning stage of all projects.

And this is the first green Commonwealth Games to be held in Hambantota.
